Ethics and Privacy

This study has been approved by the St Vincent's Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC/12/SVH/34).

The main privacy laws that apply to UNSW Australia are the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1989 (NSW) and the Health Records and Information Protection Act 2001 (NSW).

These Acts have introduced principles to ensure personal and health information held by public sector agencies, including the UNSW Australia, is not modified, used or accessed by unauthorised people. The principles regulate the handling of personal and health information, and cover its collection, storage, use, disclosure and disposal. The University's Privacy Management Plan identifies how the University will comply with the principles.

The Acts also allow a person who feels their privacy has been breached by the University, to make a privacy complaint to the University. Information on making privacy complaints is in Part 2 of the Privacy Management Plan.

Questions about privacy at the University may be directed to the Privacy Officer.
